Ohio Toledo Museum of Art
2445 Monroe St.
Toledo, OH 43697
(419) 255-8000

The Toledo Museum of Art’s American glass ranks today among the principal collections in the field, including objects of exceptional quality and historical importance. Glass industrialist Edward Drummond Libbey (1854–1925), founder and benefactor of the Museum, recognized the importance of the Museum’s role in maintaining high standards of craftsmanship and artistic design. He spearheaded the initiative to improve the education of local craftsmen and designers by assembling a model glass collection, as well as promoting training, competitions, and exhibitions of new work. The Libbey Glass Company’s extensive corporate archive entered the collection in two gifts, in 1951 and 1969. The first installment included additional objects from the company’s famous display at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Centennial Exposition and World’s Fair in St. Louis (the famed Libbey Punch Bowl had been donated earlier). Among these were a spectacular cut-glass table and an intricate floor lamp, as well as a formal dress made entirely of glass fiber that had been spun, woven, sewn, and exhibited in the Libbey Pavilion at the 1893 Columbian Exposition and World’s Fair, Chicago. Several hundred examples of tableware document the evolution of the company’s cut and engraved glass production from the 1880s through the 1940s. Due to the generosity of collectors nationwide, American cut glass (including brilliant cut glass) continues to be added to the collection

The Museum is still finalizing the move of its glass collection to the new Glass Pavilion. During the course of this year, more American brilliant cut glass will be installed in the Study Gallery to be accessible to collectors.

General art museum with an extensive historic glass collection, including about 350 pieces of American cut, engraved and blown glass, on view in new Glass Pavilion, which opened August, 2006. Tuesday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m, Friday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m, Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m, Sunday, noon-6 p.m. Closed Mondays, New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
