Group B: Additional Companies That Patented at Least One Cut-Glass Pattern (From 1874)

This file contains design patents issued for cut and engraved patterns. In addition, a few patents, granted primarily or exclusively for shapes (i. e., blanks), are also listed. They are as follows: a footed cut-glass bowl (Herbert, 1910), a dish with a cornered rim (Keystone, 1911), a cut-glass open cart (Max Herbert, 1913), and a cut-glass jug (Liberty, 1926). Two shapes designed by the Meriden Flint Glass Company are also included. Each is cut in the unpatented Star & Hobnail (Russian Cleveland) pattern that is not considered part of the patent.

All of the designs by Maurice A. Smith for the McKee Glass Company -- except one called "Spray" -- were intended for items made of pressed glass ("Prescut"), including the company's "Innovation Cut Glass" lines where small amounts of cutting and/or engraving were added to pressed-glass articles. This glass is excluded from this file. For the same reason, Reuben Haley's designs for the United States Glass Company are also omitted. Only that company's simple engraving by Bror Johnson is listed. Revi's comment concerning the United States Glass Company can also be applied to the McKee Glass Company: -- "There is nothing particularly fine or distinctive about these patterns, and the designs were primarily intended for a cheaper market than most cut glass manufacturers were serving at that time [i.e., c1916-c1919]" (Revi 1965, p. 354).

All patents were assigned by their patentees to the companies indicated, except those marked with an asterisk (*). These patents were retained by their patentees. Patent specifications and drawings are available at the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office's Web site. Insert the letter D before the patent number when filling in the request box. Example: D44330.

Principal sources: Revi (1965); Barbe and Reed (2003) for companies located in Wayne county, PA; these companies are marked with a plus sign (+).
